Canada’s prestigious Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts is a lifetime achievement award recognizing an artist’s career, body of work and contribution to the visual arts, media arts and fine craft in Canada. In 2021, eight artists were celebrated in recognition of their exceptional careers and remarkable contributions to the visual arts, media arts and fine craft. The 2021 winners were: Lou Lynn, Dempsey Bob, Bonnie Devine, Luc Courchesne, Cheryl L’Hirondelle, Bryce Kanbara, Lori Blondeau and Germaine Arnaktauyok.
This exhibition, presented by the AGGV in collaboration with the Canada Council for the Arts, presents the work of the 2021 award recipients. It is a rare opportunity to see the work of these artists, who live in all parts of Canada, together in one location. The AGGV is honoured to have been selected by the Canada Council for the Arts to curate and host the 2021 exhibition.
The Governor General’s Awards were created in 1999 by the Canada Council and the Governor General of Canada to celebrate Canada’s vibrant arts community and recognize remarkable careers in the visual and media arts. Over the last two decades, a total of 170 contemporary artists and arts professionals have been honoured.
The Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts 2021 exhibition is organized by the AGGV and curated by Jaimie Isaac, with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.

Ryan Sobkovich is an accomplished young phenom from Wasaga Beach, ON. Scouted and nurtured from a young age, Ryan has been professionally exhibiting in galleries since he was sixteen. Aware of the importance of education, Ryan consciously took the time to advance his education and graduated from Georgian College, School of Design and Visual Arts in 2016 with Honours in the Advanced Fine Art Program. Now at twenty-seven he is already a veteran and one to collect in Canadian art.
Ryan's love of nature inspires him to paint wilderness scenes of Canada while hiking, camping and kayaking around the great lakes and other areas across the country. He utilizes dynamic, impasto brushwork and layered complementary colours to convey emotions, feelings and thoughts while on site in the wilderness. Ryan particularly enjoys painting 'en plein air' and painting in large scale. His works are collected by private, corporate and public collectors nationally and internationally.

Join us for a special book talk with award-winning writer, conservation photographer, book author, and documentary filmmaker, Isabelle Groc.   This evening will include a conversation with the writer about her book Conservation Canines: How Dogs Work the Environment. Isabelle will provide a rare glimpse into dogs’ working lives, celebrate the human-animal bond, and revisit our relationship with dogs in our lives and the natural world. Isabelle will share her passion for wildlife conservation and the relationships between people and the natural world, especially about how dogs work with humans to protect endangered wildlife.   There will also be a special canine scent demonstration by Victoria-based dog instructor Janet Parker, who will show us how nose work can also benefit pet dogs! A book signing will be available after the talk and demonstration.   RSVP at https://batemanfoundation.org/event/book-talk-conservation-canines-with-isabelle-groc/ to reserve your spot.

The One Take Super 8 Event is back again for its third edition on Vancouver Island! Join us for the world premiere of 22 new analogue movies presented LIVE on celluloid Super 8 film at Metro Studio Theatre or online.
Super 8 film took the world by storm in the 1960s and 70s as an accessible way to make “home movies.” Today, the format remains an analogue escape from our digital world. The One Take Super 8 Event began in the year 2000 in Regina SK, and since then it has inspired the creation and screening of over 1,000 films in more than 50 locations around the world.
Earlier this summer, participants from Victoria and the surrounding region answered the open call to participate in a fun, non-competitive, community-driven filmmaking and screening opportunity. They were given a camera, a roll of film, and one week to create their own 3-minute Super 8 movie. The only catch: no editing. The filmmakers had to shoot their scenes in order with no second chances, and they’ll witness their work for the first time along with an audience at the community screenings. Soundtracks are optional, created separately from the film and manually cued up on the night.
